How should design and marketing agencies market themselves?

I've spoken to a couple of designers and agencies recently who are thinking about how best to re-do their website or marketing collateral.

All of them have the same concern about this one chance to get across what it is they do and how they do it.

Do we go super cool and risk putting off someone looking for a more standard site?
Do we go standard and corporate and risk looking boring?
Something else............

I don't know the answer of course. It's a tough call. But I found this site and think it's possibly my favourite approach so far...
